Firefighter L.E. (Eddie) Caracofe

March 12, 1948 – June 21, 1979

Eddie Caracofe was  killed in the line of duty while fighting a mutual-aid arson fire at Jess’s Quick Lunch, 22 South Main St., Harrisonburg, VA on June 21, 1979. Eddie’s two sons, Chris and Charles,  are active firefighters in Mt. Solon Volunteer Fire Company. On October 28, 2006, a memorial service was held honoring the life of Firefighter Caracofe.

Chief Wayne Stoutamyer

April 30, 1950 – May 25, 1976

Wayne Stoutamyer was shot to death in the line of duty on May 25, 1976, while serving as a police officer for the Town of Bridgewater. At the time of Wayne’s murder, he was also Fire Chief of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Company. On September 15, 2006, the life of Chief Stoutamyer was honored during a special memorial service.

In 2006 a special memorial service was held to honor the lives of firefighter Eddie Caracofe & Chief Wayne Stoutamyer. 

A Firefighter’s Prayer

When I’m called to duty God
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
those I have loved in life.
